When do I need a visa for the United States?
Swedish citizens can normally travel to the United States without a visa for tourism, business visits, or transit for up to 90 days through the Visa Waiver Program. To travel without a visa, you must have an approved ESTA before departure. The ESTA is an electronic travel authorization and not a visa.
You will normally need to apply for a visa to the United States if you are going to work, study, stay longer than 90 days, move to the United States, travel as a journalist, or if you do not meet the requirements for ESTA. Even if you have an ESTA or visa, the final decision on entry is always made by U.S. border officials.
Note: The above information applies to Swedish passport holders. Other nationalities may have different requirements. Some travelers may need to apply for a visa in advance or provide additional documents when applying.
